A Norristown Initiative

How was the team formed:

It was the spring of 2009. It was a time when the Norristown Police Department and other officials decided something had to be done to bridge the gap between the Police Department and the community it serves. A meeting was held at the George Washington Carver Center between officers representing the police department and members of the community. The outcome of the meeting was not one expected by the organizers, the obvious tension in the room made it apparent that the relationship between police and community needed to be mended.

No one knew at the time, but this meeting was going to mark the beginning of major changes in Norristown.

It was decided that outside expertise was needed the National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI) was brought in to provide the help Norristown needed. The suggestion was well received by Chief Bono of the Norristown Police Department and, with the approval of Municipal Council; NCBI was brought in as an outside consultant.

After over a year of organizing and overcoming obstacles; the Norristown Community and Cops Coalition Building Team (NC3BT) was formed. The team is comprised of several police officers of different ranks and responsibilities and a diversified group of community members.

Diverse perspectives were sought and used toward developing a training model for strengthening communication skills and relationships. The team has engaged in several training workshops in order to prepare them to reach out to the community. The main goal of the cohesive team is to bridge the gap between the community and the Norristown Police Department. In order to accomplish this goal, the team is going to work closely with other groups and organizations within the community as a whole.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Norristown Community & Cops Coalition Building Team (NC3BT) is to work collectively with the community as a whole to aggressively pursue awareness of the community needs and the perception of the Police Department by the citizens and through a mutual partnership resolve community problems through community workshops.

Who are we?

All of our members hail from a diverse group of businesses, organizations and entities. We all have attended training with the National Coalition Building (NCBI).
