Saturday, February 22, 2020

Camp William Penn was a Union Army training camp located in Cheltenham Township, Pennsylvania from 1863 to 1865, notable for being the first training ground dedicated to African American troops who enlisted in the United States Army during the American Civil War. The lecture includes the story of the camps creation, how the local community interacted and stories about the units that trained at the camp and their role in the war effort. The lecture also discusses the soldier’s equipment, uniforms and personal items from the period.
