Derrick Wood has resigned as Municipality of Norristown Police Chief effectively immediately.
“While we were all surprised by the sudden departure of Chief Wood, we wish him well and will continue our forward progress in the Police Department and the Municipality,” said Municipal Administrator Crandall O. Jones.
Norristown Police Lt. Michael Bishop will serve as Acting Police Chief as a search process begins to find Wood’s successor. Daily operations within the police department will continue as normal during this transition period.
Wood was sworn-in as police chief on Dec. 21, 2021 after a 23-year career with the Philadelphia Police Department. He succeeded Mark Talbot who left the department in July 2021.
The police chief is charged with leading the Norristown Police Department’s approximately 70 police officers and 30 civilian staff who work to protect the municipality’s 35,000 residents.
