[ARCHIVED] Norristown Council Focuses on Keeping Norristown Beautiful

Press Conference at Poley Park

NORRISTOWN, PA – In a demonstration of its continued commitment to addressing long-standing issues in the community, the Municipal Council of Norristown announced today they will hold a press conference on Thursday, July 19, 2018 at 8:00 a.m. at Poley Park to kick off the start of a series of heavy-duty, professional clean-ups of illegal dumpsites throughout town. The Municipality has contracted SERVPRO Restoration Services of Norristown to clear out several common dumping grounds that have plagued the area behind Poley Park on Marshall Street, underneath the Dannehower/Markley Street Bridge on East Washington Street, and a few other areas throughout town.

“These clean-ups join the list of a series of initiatives undertaken by the Municipality under the leadership of the current Municipal Council.  We will continue to proactively tackle litter, dumping, and other environmental issues in Norristown.” said Council President Sonya Sanders. “Keeping Norristown clean and eliminating the negative perceptions of our community is one of our top priorities.”

The Municipality will partner with local agencies to offer assistance to the individuals who have taken up residence in some of these areas and who have not heeded prior notice given to vacate the properties.  Security measures such as new no trespassing signs and increased monitoring will also be added to inform the public and permit local authorities to take action, if necessary, to ensure the safety of anyone found on the properties.

Earlier this month, Norristown became the first, and currently only, local affiliate of Keep America Beautiful in Montgomery County. With this certification, the Municipality of Norristown is dedicated to empowering residents to make a difference in the community through conservation, education, and beautification.
