  1. World War II in Europe: The Second Front

    October 30, 2019, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM @ Historical Society of Montgomery County

On the night of June 5 the Allied invasion of France began when more than 17,000 Allied airborne troops parachuted behind German lines in Normandy officially opening a bid to establish a second front in Europe during World War II. Before the day ended over 156,000 Allied soldiers came ashore along a fifty mile stretch of beaches on the Norman coast. This was only the beginning of what would be eleven months of hard fighting that on May 7, 1945, caused Germany’s surrender and ended World War II in Europe. Taught by historian Michael Snyder using lecture supplemented by power point and handouts, this course will cover Overlord (the planning and execution of D-Day), fighting in hedge rows of Normandy and the breakout, the Falaise Pocket and the pursuit to West Wall, Operation Market Garden, Battle of the Bulge, crossing the Rhine, and German surrender. The emphasis will be on the military and political operations but will also look at life on the home front in the Schuylkill Valley.

  1. LCN Volunteer Tutor Orientation

    October 30, 2019, 4:30 PM - 6:00 PM

Are you looking for a meaningful volunteer experience, which will impact the lives of adult learners and their families? If so, LCN needs you! We match adult volunteer tutors with other adults needing help with reading, writing, math, GED preparation or English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). Volunteer tutors attend a 1.5 hour Orientation and 12-hour Tutor Training Workshop before being matched with a student. The pair is then expected to meet at a public place twice weekly for 1.5 hours per session for a minimum of six months or until the student goal is met. Free required background checks will be provided. The next Orientation will be held from 4:30 to 6:00 PM on October 30. For more details call 610-292-8515 or visit our website:
